Abstract [en]

Abstract [en]This thesis explores the intersections of modernist architectural principles and queerspatial experiences, particularly focusing on the concept of "Raumplan" as articulatedby Adolf Loos. By investigating the relationship between domestic and public spaces, itexamines how modernist ideologies influence contemporary bodies and artisticpractices. The research draws on historical and personal narratives, questioning thelingering effects of modernity on queer identities and spaces. Through an analysis ofspecific architectural examples, such as Loos' Villa Müller and gay club dark rooms, thestudy reveals how space and design perpetuate power structures and voyeuristicdynamics. The thesis aims to uncover the potential for reinterpreting and renegotiatingthese entrenched ideas within the context of queer spatial experiences. This investigation is grounded in a critical examination of how modernist architecture, with its emphasis on rationality and order, often marginalizes and fetishizes nonnormativebodies. By juxtaposing the rigid spatial hierarchies of modernist design withthe fluid, often subversive spaces of queer culture, the research highlights the ongoingstruggle for visibility and agency within architectural discourse. Through a combinationof theoretical analysis and artistic reflection, the thesis seeks to contribute to a broaderunderstanding of how space can be both a site of oppression and liberation for queerindividuals
